CZ Weighs Exchange Versus Self-Custody: Following a major Coldcard hardware wallet exploit that resulted in the theft of over 1,367 BTC (see Tagus <> Bytes: Aug. 04, 2026), Binance co-founder Changpeng Zhao (CZ) has added to the debate by asserting that storing assets on centralised exchanges may statistically be safer than self-custody based on historical data. Analysis by River indicates that approximately 1.51mn BTC were lost through exchange-related incidents between 2010 and 2025, compared with an estimated 1.57mn BTC lost through self-custody failures. However, self-custody losses are likely to be understated, as forgotten seed phrases, lost private keys, and damaged hardware wallets often remain private and unreported, while exchange breaches are typically publicly disclosed and may be reimbursed by major platforms. Nevertheless, self-custody remains fundamental to preserving Bitcoin's sovereign, seizure-resistant properties. As both custodial and non-custodial models involve different operational and security trade-offs, a balanced approach may ultimately prove the most appropriate solution for many investors, including corporate treasuries.
