Bitcoin Crosses Twenty Million Supply Milestone: Bitcoin’s blockchain mined its 20 millionth coin this week (i.e. Mar. 9, 2026) at block height 939,999, meaning 95.24% of the protocol’s fixed 21 million supply is now in circulation. The milestone block was mined by Foundry USA, earning the current 3.125 BTC reward set by the Apr. 2024 halving, which reduced daily issuance from 900 BTC to about 450 BTC. The final one million coins will be released gradually over more than a century, with full supply expected around 2140. In practice, circulating supply is materially lower. Estimates suggest 2.3 to 3.7mn BTC are permanently lost, while 600,000 to 1.1mn BTC linked to early wallets widely attributed to Satoshi Nakamoto have never moved. If these holdings remain dormant, the effective float may be closer to 16 to 18mn BTC, tightening available supply as institutional participation grows. The implications of this shrinking effective supply are discussed below.
