U.S. Digital Wealth Overtakes Gold: U.S. Bitcoin ownership has reached 18.6% (49.6 million adults), surpassing gold ownership at 10.8%. The gap has widened from 4.1% in 2022 to 7.8% by 2026, driven by easier digital access, U.S. ETFs, and generational shifts toward digital assets. While Bitcoin benefits from rising adoption, liquidity, and institutional network effects, central banks, particularly in emerging markets, continue accumulating physical gold as a strategic reserve asset to diversify away from traditional dollarisation and reduce exposure to sanctions risk, geopolitical fragmentation, and concentration within the existing financial system. This highlights a growing divergence between private adoption of digital scarcity and sovereign efforts to strengthen monetary resilience through established reserve assets.
